Guinea Pigs Favourite Vegetables/Fruits

Hey! It has recently come into Summer for us in New Zealand, although you would hardly know it as it is continually raining here. With this supposed better weather, means a different range of vegetables that are available at our local markets. We hardly ever buy our vegetables from the supermarket anymore, not only for the sheer price difference, it means we also know where the vegetables are coming from, and that they are fresh. Whenever I can, I love supporting local products and businesses. So with all this new summer vegetables and fruits starting to filter into the pigs diet I thought I would share what they are enjoying at the moment.

Capsicum (Red, Yellow, Green Peppers)
We have tried to feed these year round as they are great for vitamin C and the boys absolutely love it. However, during the winter months the price for a single capsicum was nearing $2-3! Now that it is December, the price is half, if not a third of that so it means that are getting it daily instead of every se…

November Bow Wow Box!

Image
Hey everyone! We have signed up for a monthly subscription box called Bow Wow Box. This is a New Zealand based subscription service for dogs, and you can chose out of three sizes, small, medium and large. This is our third month getting the medium sized box, and we love them! We look forward to the post each month, and I am always so eager to rip into it. The first two months we made videos to show off the box, however for a change, this month we decided to do a blog post to show you what we got.

First off, we got these Superior Farms Venison Waffles. We got a Superior Farms product in our first box, and it went down a treat with the boys so I am excited to rip into this for them.
Next we got these Veal Ribs from the same company that we received the Kangaroo Jerky from. This is an awesome company from Auckland, New Zealand. I really like that we are getting treats that are not generic, I have never seen these in chain pet stores and nor are they a global corporate company. I have not…

Update Post

Hey everyone! I have been very slack recently, and as you would have probably noticed, I slowly stopped uploading videos and posts on here. I do apologize a lot. I currently have an injury to my wrist, which means that I am actually not allowed to use a keyboard or computer much, if at all. The worst part is that my work is constant computer use, and also my specialist appointment isn't until the end of January! It's slowly getting better, so I want to start getting back into the blog since I miss it so much. If there are missing posts, I hope that you now understand why because I need to think of long term at the moment, so if it shows any signs of hurting, I will have to take another little break, or try type with one hand ;)

Quick updates:

We have been to three dog training lessons so far, and have been enjoying it. As I assumed, we haven't learnt too much over what we already knew, but it is really cementing our knowledge and getting our training out of the house. Plus,…

Puppy Training Day 1

Image
Hey guys! Diego and I are currently going to some puppy pre-school classes run by the Dog Guru which is New Zealand wide. We were on the fence as to whether we should go to a puppy class as Diego knows all the basic skills, and we are now looking at tricks, harder basics and basic obedience show skills. I am happy we decided to go though, as it is just cementing what we have learnt at home, and it means that we are practicing around other dogs, smells and environments that he may see in day to day activities.  First day was good, we done sits, downs, and stays all of which Diego completed fantastically. He did get a bit bored in the second half of the day and was preferring to wrestle with his brother than listen to me.

Product Review: Little Chintas Mega Stuff-It

Image
Hey everyone! This post has been a long time coming, I actually got this toy in early September, and had it in their cage around a similar time. I will be getting a few reviews out in the next few weeks, so that we can get straight into some Christmas themed posts over December. Before I rip into this review, let me start with saying that my guinea pigs are not big chewers. I have had lots of toys rotated between them and Schmutz (my rabbit) and they either leave a couple bite marks, or none at all. I have once seen BMO play with a cat toy ball, but I am not sure if he was actually playing, or more moving it out of his area.
The 'Mega Stuff-It' is a ball made out of twisted willow twigs, with hay on the inside. I knew that the boys would love the hay inside, and decided it could be a great new way to feed them their daily ration of hay. I am not sure if the pictures are showing the true size of this ball, it was easily as big as my pigs! I had also heard from multiple overseas …

Guinea Pig Favourites!

Image
Hey everyone! We are in the midst of editing a video for Carislittlepiggies 2,000 subscriber contest and I decided it would be a good idea to write a blog post about our favourite things for the pigs of the moment as well as the video. I will also make a rabbit favourites in the near future as Schmutz is got a lot of great toys.

Our first favourite is of course vegetables. I try and mix up the type of vegetables they get each day but their definite favourites are red pepper, celery, carrot, apple/pear and any type of leafy green like lettuce or cabbage. I find it interesting how different pigs have completely different tastes in vegetables, when I was growing up the pigs I owned loved broccoli and cauliflower, BMO and Knuckles will eat it, but somewhat grudgingly. They prefer the stalk and the actual flower of these vegetables they try their best to ignore. I personally only feed fruit during clicker training, as it is very sugary, I like to have it as a treat that they know they only…

November already!

Hey! I can't believe that Postober is already over. It seems like just last week that I was planning Postober,  and writing the blog post to go alongside it. Now we are already into November! Time is flying past, in November Diego will be 6 months old, and then in December both Schmutz and BMO are turning 1!
Time for our monthly Focuses! Last month was all about Postober, and making great content to fill the month. This month we are going to focus on training. Diego starts a dog training class in mid November, and I want to do some work with both the pigs and Schmutz.

1. Clicker Train the Pigs
I haven't yet started official clicker training with the pigs. I have done our pre-training which involves getting both BMO and Knuckles comfortable with eating outside of their cage, and eating from my hand. With this work, it means that once we start clicker training, they will pick it up easily I hope. I will just start with target training for this month, and get that perfect base fo…

Dinosaur Exhibition

Image
Hello! Today we went to our local Museum which is currently holding an exhibition all about the Tyrannosaurus family. It was intriguing to find out that there is more than just the T-Rex under the Tyrannosaurus name, and they all have five similar features which make them a Tyrannosaurus but they do range in size. As everyone, I have always known about dinosaurs and their previous existence but it's not until you look at these skeletons do you really think about them roaming the earth. These were the animals that used to be, and it's strange that they might have continued to be if something didn't happen to them. What I wonder is, that if they did survive, would we as humans have flourished as well as we have? The same applies for all animals as well, if the dinosaurs were still around would have dogs evolved as much of they have, would certain animals still exist, and some not exist that do now? I guess these kind of questions could also apply to most of history, but as a…

Halloween Dog Jack O Lantern Treats

Image
Hey Everyone! On Tuesday we put up a Halloween video on our YouTube channel. We showed you how to bake Dog Treat Jack O Lanterns. I have decided that I will now write a blog post on the recipe, just so that you all have a physical form when you recreate these treats. I found that the mixture was very sticky, so I did add more flour then the recipe calls for.

3 cups all-purpose flour
1 cup warm water
1/2 cup nonfat dry milk
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
3 small eggs
3 cubes chicken stock
Food Colouring (optional)
Dog Treats (Decoration)

1. Preheat over to 180 degrees (350 Fahrenheit)

2. Combine all the dry ingredients in a large bowl and stir until well mixed. Slowly add the eggs, water, and food colouring to form a stiff dough. Knead the dough with your hands for two minutes.

3. Form the dough into a ball and place it on a floured breadboard. Roll the dough out like you would for sugar cookies.

4. Use a cookie cutter of your own choice to cut out the cookies. (We had looked for bone…

Daisy's Memorial

Image
Hey! On the 15th of October it was the first anniversary of Daisy's death. This time last year was horrible, and the day matched it. I remember being inside crying while mum was out in the poring rain digging a hole that kept filling with water. This year however, Daisy had put on the sun for us and it was getting to a hot temperature.
I was sick this year, so I couldn't do much for her memorial which is a shame. Diego and I went up to her grave, where we planted a new daisy plant to bring flowers back to the grave. We then went for a quick walk along the route that me and Daisy traveled most afternoons. It was such a lovely walk, I hadn't walked it for a long time so it was nice to reminisce on what life was like.

I decided that to celebrate Daisy's one year memorial, I would give you some more information about the dog that inspired it all.
I got Daisy for my tenth Christmas present, and she was definitely the best thing that had ever happened to me. She was a Bichon …

Pups on Holiday!

Image
Hey! This last weekend, we packed up our car with both the dogs and headed for a long weekend at Mount Maunganui in New Zealand. This is Diego's first road trip, and the actual drive is about 7 - 9 hours long so we were really testing him with this drive. I was not really worried as every time we are in a car, he just falls straight to sleep, and this time was no different! He did have a slight car sickness when we got there, but nothing bad, and he was zooming around the back garden in no time.
It was great spring weather while we were up there, so we went on lots of walks and adventures in which Diego held his own perfectly. Asha was also surprisingly calm during all our trips. Diego's favourite new past time is running up the sand dunes, and either running down really fast, or jumping off.
While we were up there, we also picked up a new camera that we have been looking at for a while! So we did get a bit snap happy, but here are some of our shots from our trip and I hope yo…
