12DOC: Kim's K9s Accessories

This is Day 6 of our 12 Days of Christmas Posts! I will have all posts together on one page, so that you can go through that page if you are interested in reading all of our posts. You can view that page here. All giveaways within this period last two weeks from the day that the post is originally posted, and are only available within New Zealand. Giveaway winners will be announced on my social media and vlog channel. Now let's get into today's post:

Today's post is all about Kim's K9s Accessories which is another Auckland based business. All the other areas of New Zealand need to catch up on the entrepreneurial game. Kim's K9s is a dog walking service, and then from there has found a need for dog walking accessories. I have only recently found her Facebook accounts and have fallen in love with her products and her dogs. Due to me not having actually tried her products, I didn't want to do a review but thought it would be awesome to learn more about her and her business. So here we are doing an interview post, I hope you enjoy learning about her as much I did!

What made you start a pet related business?
I have been in the animal industry for almost 10 years. Working in pet stores, animal control, pet insurance, vet nursing, pretty much everything you could think of, and although I enjoyed all these jobs and the experience I got from them I never fully felt settled, so I firstly started my own business dog walking, and then from there started making collars and leads. I needed something strong and light for my walks and couldn’t find anything I liked, so started making my own, then people started commenting on them and suggested I should sell them.

How would you describe your products/business?
Custom made strong, durable and light weight dog collars and leads. Great for all types of dogs and their adventures.

Have you always been interested in the idea of dogs/a dog related business?
Dogs have always been a big part of our family and I have always had a fascination with animals ever since I was little so I think it was just meant to be.

Tell us about your pets.
Cleo – she is my old Staffy x she is 13 yrs old and is more than happy spending her days sleeping in the sunshine. I kind of have joint custody of her so she doesn’t live with me, but she taught me a lot about dog training and behaviour as she was MY first dog.
Riley – she is our 9month old pug x griffon, she is a tiny full of beans little thing and certainly keeps us all on our toes. She is super smart and loves coming on adventures with me and the dogs I walk. Smush is our Persian Cat. She is super smoochy and loves everyone, her favourite thing to do is lie next to you and have belly rubs.
Squish is our Exotic cat (short haired Persian) her favourite place is on the bed, sleeping the day away, she loves cuddles and being held like a baby.
Harley-Quinn is our moggy. She is super talkative and is a definite daddys girl!!

What has been the hardest struggle of starting a business?
Firstly having the guts to start it, taking that first leap was terrifying but now I’m so glad I did it. I absolutely love what I do.

Where do you see yourself and your business in the next five years?
Hopefully I will have an awesome member of staff or two who will take over my walking side of things so that I can then be concentrating on what will be an even more awesome range of collars and leads.

If you could tell the world only one thing, what would it be?
Enjoy your life and take risks! You only life once, so don’t be afraid to take those leaps in to new exciting things.

Who is your biggest inspiration?
My mum. She is awesome and I wouldn’t be where I am without her. She also used to have her own business and seeing her do it really inspired me. She has helped and supported me through everything I do and is like my best friend!

What are your plans for this Summer?
We don’t have any big plans this summer. We just got married a couple months ago in Bali so we are just staying around home and enjoying married life 😊

Where is your favourite dog walk/hike/park in New Zealand?
Riverhead Forest is definitely my favourite. There are so many different tracks, of so many lengths. If you want a short walk, sorted. If you want to get lost for hours also perfect! There are awesome water holes, and you can either stay on the main track or completely immerse yourself into the forest, its awesome!

Which product do you make is your favourite?
My newest product which is the pack strap. Its perfect for single or multiple dogs. You just attach a carabiner, and your dogs to the carabiner and off you go, hands free. Its perfect for my pack walks as I can just attach them all to it and head off on an adventure

Finally, let us know about your products and if you have any deals coming up.
My first range of collars and leads and the ones that I’m giving away are made out of super strong paracord, they come in such an awesome variety of colours and the collars are custom made to fit. There are a couple different designs to choose from too. You get to choose the colours and mix and match how you like. My other lot of leads are a bit more simple and thicker so great for everyday use. My newest item is called the ‘pack strap’ which is currently my favourite as explained above.

I hope you enjoyed learning more about Kim, and what she had to say about her business and products. As you saw in the last question, she was super kind to gift us a lead and collar from her collection to giveaway. This is super exciting, and I can't wait to see how cute one of your dogs will look in this combo. As I love to mention, we cannot request you to follow or like our social media pages but due to the generosity of Kim I would love if you could support her or myself by doing this!
